Microsoft Exchange 2010 what affects the size of the mailbox database

The Microsoft Exchange database size depends mainly on the number and size of the mailboxes located at the mailbox database.

Size of boxes, which will be located in a given database, we can predict and control so that we know about what size will depend on our database.

Unfortunately, there is still a couple of other factors that could cause sudden expansion of the size of the database or its continued growth.
Below we will present on what you should look in the settings database.

The main parameter determining the maximum size of mailboxes in the database is Quota.
Quotas can be set at the mailbox database and then will apply to all mailboxes in the database if individual quota is set on mailbox.

The quotas can view the values and set in the Exchange Management Console in the properties of the database, we can also be changed using the PowerShell command:

Displays the current quota limits:

 Get-MailboxDatabase "MailboxDatabase" | Select *Quota*

Microsoft Outlook search tips

When you want to find something in Microsoft Outlook you can use Search Bar.

To do this press Ctrl+E or just click in Search Bar.

The search bar in the new Microsoft Outlook 2013 allows us to select items in search:

  • current mailbox
  • current folder
  • subfolders
  • all mailboxes
  • all Outlook items

But in Microsoft Outlook you can use more options which will help you to find something.

You have to just write specified query in search box.
like:
messagesize:>5mb – find all messages which size is more than 5MB.

subject:”some subject” – find all messages with subject some subject

also you can use logical operators like AND, NOT, OR, <, >, = to refine your search.
Remember: Logical operators must be typed in uppercase letters.

More examples of search criteria can be found below in table:

Microsoft Exchange 2010 how to reduce the size of the database

As is known in the Microsoft Exchange database size after removal of the mailboxes is not decreasing but remains the same.
Created the database “gap” so called White Space which tells us about the amount of available space, which can be used without the need to increase the size of the database file .edb.
Only after completing the White Space, a further increase in the size of mailboxes in the database, it will increase the file size .edb file.

In the case of Microsoft Exchange databases such solution is problematic, because in order to reduce file size .edb after removing mailboxes from the database we use the most with ESEUTIL, which have performed defrag the database.

How to remove (purge) Disconnected Mailboxes

If in the Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 we delete mailbox users by selecting the Remove or Disable, mailboxes and their contents are still stored in the Exchange database.

The difference between the operation Remove and Disable:

  • Disable – disconnects the mailbox from email were the user account in Active Directory, leaving the user account enabled, as indicated in the Disconnected mailboxes list, disappears from the address book and it can be reconnected by going in for EMC: Exchange Organization -> Recipient Configuration -> Disconnect Mailboxes
  • Remove – removes the user account in Active Directory with mailbox

If you want to see a list of disconnected mailboxes in specified Exchange databasethen use the command:

Get-MailboxStatistics -Database "MailboxDatabase" | Where { $_.DisconnectDate -ne $null } | select DisplayName, DisconnectDate,TotalItemSize, TotalDeletedItemSize

to show all disconnected mailboxes in specified mailbox server:

Get-MailboxStatistics -Server MBXServer | where { $_.DisconnectDate -ne $null } | select DisplayName,DisconnectDate | sort DisconnectDate

Exchange 2010 unable to sent Out of Office, Mail Tips problem

The problem of the peculiar cycle of failure.
Exchange 2010 no longer generate an automatic response (AutoReplay Outlook Out of Office). In Outlook 2010 does not also appear in the mail tips for absence.
There was no problem with setting OOF via Outlook and OWA.
Proved to be helpful to restart the Exchange Mailbox Assistants Services on the server.
The problem is basically trivial, but maybe someone will save time. The more that in Google for similar problems przypadu meets reconfiguration proposals and EWSa Autodiscover.
So before we start all over again to configure all the paths WebServices supported by the Exchange, we first try to restart the Exchange Mailbox Assistants service, perhaps so that we save a lot of time.

The solution can also be an additional dismount the database and mount it again.

In the case of DAG environment, just for a moment change the active database to another located on another server.

Microsoft Exchange 2013 installation requirements

Microsoft Exchange 2013 Preview can be downloaded here (it takes about 1.5 GB).

To install Exchange 2013 Preview requires that the Active Directory is located at least one domain controller to Windows Server 2008 and requires that in each Active Directory Site was a Global Catalog.

Exchange 2013 Preview can be installed in an environment where the level of the forest is at least Windows 2003.

During the installation of Exchange server roles, it is recommended that you first install the CAS role (Client Access Server), and MBX (Mailbox Server).

The network environment must support IPv4, IPv6 is also supported but may not be such a situation, we installed the Exchange 2013 Preview in the environment that only supports IPv6, the installation fails. So far we are probably not in danger.

As previously mentioned on our Blog, Exchange 2013 Preview does not work with Exchange 2003!

The Exchange 2013 Preview can install either the Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 SP1 or on Windows Server 2012.
